Department of Defense

The Department of Defense (DoD) uses JMP to fulfill its primary responsibility – to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country. Its powerful statistical features, visual nature, and point-and-click interface provide quicker answers at lower costs. Design of Experiments

Create a clear, predictive picture of a process using design of experiments (DOE) methods to get the most information from the fewest experimental trials. DOE helps testers get quicker answers, solve bigger problems and lower costs.

JMP users in the Department of Defense conduct both real experiments and, increasingly, experiments run with sophisticated computer simulations. With either type of experimentation DOE enables users to:

Conduct sensitivity analysis of the tested factors.

Answer “what if...?” questions.

Optimize multiple Measures of Performance (MOP) to make informed trade-offs.

The interactive Prediction Profiler shows the relationships between the two MOPs and Cost (predictions shown vertically at left) and four factors: Speed, Temperature, Time and Force (and their settings shown horizontally along the bottom). The desirability of each response is shown with the goals of maximizing the MOPs and minimizing the cost. JMP can automatically search the parameter space to find the best trade-off in performance subject to the importance of each response.

Interactive Prediction Profiler

In the case of long-running simulations like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) – where 10 seconds of simulation of a process may take a day to run on a high-performance computing cluster – DOE can be used to create designs to support a fast (seconds-long), surrogate model of a simulation that requires hours, days or even weeks.

JMP’s dynamic Prediction Profiler shows a model of a single response fit for five factors with confidence intervals (dashed blue lines) about the model predictions. Model uncertainty for “point predictions” (the red number to the left) can be interactively examined through the use of Monte Carlo simulation when the distributions of uncertainty in the factors (shown below factor names) are known. The prediction uncertainty is displayed as the green distribution to the right of the factors.
